Chapter Twenty-Six

The iron rod came down hard on Yola’s stomach. Bile burst from her gut as pain seared her body. She fell to her knees, doubled over in pain.

“Take that as a warning,” the old man said.

“Please. I just want to find the free zone,” Yola pleaded. “I’m not going to hurt anyone. I just want to be on my way.”

“The free zone, is it?” the man stepped away with fear in his eyes. “That’s all I needed to know.”

He strode away without another word, locking her in the cell to wallow in pain. She sat against the wall and pulled her knees toward her chest, holding her stomach to ease the pain.
